Privacy

The short version

This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from anyone else's server. Fonts, images and video are all served from this domain. Nobody is profiled and nothing is shared with advertisers, because there is nothing to share.

The one thing that is recorded is what every web server records: the address your request came from. That is described below, along with the photographs from public events.

This is a personal site. It is not operated by, and processes no data on behalf of, any company.

Server logs

Each request is written to a log containing your IP address, the page requested, the time, and the browser and operating system your browser reports. An IP address counts as personal data, which is why this section exists.

This is kept to run the site and to investigate abuse or attacks — a legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. The logs are not used to build a profile, are never combined with anything else, and are not passed to anyone.

They are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Photographs from events

The site publishes photographs taken at public Web3 and fintech events. People can be recognisable in them.

Every such event displayed signage stating that photography and filming were taking place. Publication rests on a legitimate interest in documenting public professional activity, and the choice of images favours rooms and scenes over close portraits of individuals.

If you appear in a photograph and would rather not, write to steve@stevebalkans.com and it will be removed. No explanation is needed and nothing will be asked of you.

If you write to me

Email sent to steve@stevebalkans.com is kept for as long as the exchange is useful, so that a conversation can be picked up later. Mail is hosted by Google Workspace. There is no contact form on this site and no newsletter.

Where the site runs

On a server rented from Hetzner Online GmbH, physically located in Helsinki, Finland. Data stays within the European Union.

Your rights

You may ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, ask that its use be restricted, and object to it being processed at all. Write to steve@stevebalkans.com.

In practice there is very little to ask about: unless you have emailed me or appear in a photograph, all that exists is a log line that deletes itself within a month.

If you are not satisfied with how a request is handled, you can complain to the Croatian Personal Data Protection Agency (AZOP), Selska cesta 136, Zagreb — azop.hr.

Changes

If this ever stops being true — if analytics are added, for example — this page changes first and carries the date of the change.
